ZnSe(Te) Scintillator Crystal

Zinc Selenide (Te) - ZnSe(Te) scintillation crystals

Zinc Selenide (Te) - ZnSe(Te) scintillation crystals have an emission maximum at 640 nm and, as such, are well matched for use with silicon photodiodes. Two variants are available - ‘Fast’ ZnSe(Te), (decay time of 3-5 µs) and ‘Slow’ ZnSe(Te) (decay time of 30-50 µs).

ZnSe(Te) scintillator crystal strengths:

  • Reasonably good stopping power with a density of 5.42g/cm³
  • Stable characteristics up to 400°C
  • Virtually free of ‘afterglow’
  • Radiation hard up to 10¹¹ Rad
  • Mechanically robust characteristics, no cleavage planes and are non-hygroscopic.

ZnSe(Te) scintillator crystals, issues to be noted:

  • Poor transparency - limits usable thicknesses

Zinc Selenide (Te) - ZnSe(Te) scintillator crystals are useful in diverse applications such as:

  • Medical - Tomography and Instruments
  • Industrial - NDT
  • Security
  • Specialist applications in high energy, nuclear, space and medical physics
